What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda, a 5000-year-old Vedic system of health and wellness knowledge, can be defined as a blend of medical and spiritual wisdom. Not only is Ayurveda considered to be the oldest healthcare system in the world but it’s also the secret to a long life. Ayurveda is all about balancing the energies of the vital elements residing in our body like Vata (Air), Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Water), for a better quality of life.
Showcasing malleable attributes, Ayurveda blends seamlessly with your contemporary city life. Ayurveda also lets you decide your level of involvement in its treatments, be it a simple massage every once a blue moon or treatment of an ailment with magical potions made from herbs and plants extracts. Ayurveda is not just a stop along the way, it is a way of life, a destination.
Known as the home to Ayurveda, Kerala is all about intimate encounters with nature. A trip to Kerala is incomplete without the experience of an Ayurvedic massage or spa treatment, even if you’re just there as an observing tourist or a family on holiday. We’ve had some incredible Ayurvedic massages on a previous holiday at the Kumarakom Lake Resort in Kerala.
Ancient Knowledge and Expertise
Kerala’s tradition of Ayurveda has lived through centuries of changes. The ancient traditional practitioners were the only medical experts people referred to, and this privileged knowledge was limited to eight renowned families. Today, this knowledge has been passed on to numerous Ayurvedic practitioners who think of Ayurveda as a way of life even today. With a strong belief in the Ayurvedic treatment for a healthy way of life, the residents of Kerala rely on these Ayurvedic practitioners in case of an ailment or disease.
God’s Own Country
God’s Own Country, Kerala, has a natural ambience that is most conducive for practicing wellness and health. The tropical climate set amidst lush forests and plantations, combined with an abundance of monsoon rains makes Kerala the perfect setting for a restorative and healing treatment. With a temperature range of 24-28 degrees during the monsoons, the rate of humidity and moisture in Kerala is perfect for Ayurvedic treatments and medications. Possessing rich alkaline qualities, even the soil is conducive to escalate the potency of the medicinal plants throughout the year. Adding a cherry on the top, the Kerala cuisine only enriches this Ayurvedic journey towards wellness.
What happens when you come back?
After Charles returned, my first question to him was, “So, what are the doctor’s instructions?” As we kept listening to his answer, we realised that none of it sounded like a revelation, it was all just common sense. We are aware how living in an air-conditioned environment for a very long time isn’t healthy for us; neither is eating processed foods, too much meat or sitting with a bad posture. But we somehow manage to ignore this path to wellness and brush it aside. The best part of the doctor’s instructions was perhaps the dose of pragmatism with which it was administered. “Follow as much as you can”, he knew he couldn’t expect a complete lifestyle overhaul from a city dweller with a busy life, so he left it to Charles’ discretion. This experience however, has both of us leading our lives in a manner that is a little more deliberate when it comes to choices that affect our health and well-being.
It also has us looking forward to the next time we opt for Kerala tour packages for another dose of wellness and happiness. Have you ever been on an Ayurvedic retreat? Where? How was your experience? Tell us in the comments below!
