As Travel Bloggers, we are never really on holiday and that’s exactly why we fill our travel bags with essentials that make all our times on the road more fun and less work. We believe we just landed the perfect addition to our travel essentials – the DALI Katch.
DALI Katch – what and why?
First, let’s get all the essentials about this nifty little portable speaker offering from DALI out of the way. DALI (Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries) let us preview it’s first ever portable Bluetooth speaker – Katch. Our very first impression unboxing the DALI was we were holding a well made, premium product. The quality finish just running your fingers around the product is just what you expect from DALI and fully justifies the price tag. This isn’t a cheap toy and it let’s you know it means serious business as soon as you slide it out of the soft carry bag.
Inside this weighty yet extremely portable body are a set of two 21mm soft-dome tweeters and a pair of aluminium woofers, positioned on either side and delivering 2 x 25W of power. Functions are no-nonsense with simple controls on the top spine. In addition to the standard power, volume and the Bluetooth pairing button, you’ll also notice an EQ button. The EQ button toggles between two playing profiles. The first is for freestanding playing on an open surface (an outdoor table, for example) and the other is when you have it on a shelf, where it uses walls to bounce back the sound, effectively using the shelf. Run your finger along the spine and you have covered ports. These include a port for a 3.5mm jack in case you don’t want to stream via Bluetooth and a USB charging port which also lets you plug in a Chromecast Audio dongle to connect to your home network.
Power up the DALI Katch and it seemed to already know my iPhone! Connecting to this speaker is as easy as it gets and I was raring to give it a go.
The DALI Katch is well-built and you can feel the sturdy weight in your hands. But the sleek flat design lets you slip it into your carry on or day pack with ease. Outdoors, we had zero issues. Stand it up on the picnic table and it takes up very little room. It also comes with a neat sliding leather handle that makes it easy to carry around or for for butterfingers like me, i can carry my drink and the DALI Katch while moving around without dropping either of the two!
People who know me will know that there’s very little I want to do with portable speakers but after the first couple of hours with the DALI Katch, I was left impressed. Between the two of us, I think we cover every possible genre of music. So I flicked through my music and wanted to first see how deep the DALI Katch could deliver bass. From Kygo to Rush, it just didn’t disappoint, and for the first time I had a portable speaker that made me smile as Rush’s YYZ played on. It delivered the spacey groove of Firestone, adding a nice sharp accent to the percussion just where it needed to be. I rarely listen to bands like Rush on anything other than my hi-fi but the DALI Katch stepped in where no other portable has been able to so far! For someone who’s been listening to Rush for over 25 years now, I pretty much know every little nook and cranny of every song. The delivery on YYZ was more than immersive, with the giant riffs flowing through clearly without eating away the signature percussion and bass. We put the DALI Katch through various location tests – the open terrace at our home, a tight corner on a shelf, in the soundproofed bedroom, in the expanse of the living room…and it didn’t disappoint.
In the outdoors
Outdoors, at a recent picnic in the woods, was where the DALI Katch impressed me the most. I’ve seen many a portable speaker crumble outdoors, especially when surrounded by ambient sounds and conversations. In addition, you also don’t want to pump the volume too high when you’re in the woods. It needs to be just low enough to not be a disturbance and yet loud enough to let the music surround you. Again, full marks on delivery. It almost seemed like there was a special ‘In the Woods’ setting for it to blend in perfectly.
Am I going to replace my home hi-fi because of the DALI Katch? Of course not! But this portable speaker has done something many portable speakers have tried to before and failed – it impressed me enough to use it almost every day. When we’re working out at our home gym in the mornings, we’re no longer plugged into our headphones but we have the DALI Katch beating out our music. If there’s a party on our terrace, the DALI Katch is the first thing we take out. It’s even walked into the bedroom, where we love its low volume immersive experience. In the end, the DALI Katch isn’t cheap. But you definitely get what you pay for. A well-built, premium portable speaker experience that will make you want to take it everywhere you go.
